Are you familiar with the phrase...
“What gets measured, gets managed”
The point Peter Drucker was trying to drive home is that continuous improvement starts with numerical data. By determining what’s to be measured first, you can incrementally improve on it.
There is a strong-held belief that data gives us a window into what is happening on the ground. Albeit positive, data can be challenging to interpret, particularly when you’re scrolling through thousands of Excel rows.
Managing company data with care and routine good hygiene practices is great in theory, but the world you work in is riddled with disruptions. One day it's BAU, the next Extreme Weather Events are on and everything needs to happen at once. When this occurs, business reporting can feel a lot like laundry. The longer you wait to do it, the more it piles up. And you may find yourself on the path of less resistance whereby you’re not asking the questions you want to answer but default to those easiest to ask with the figures at-hand.
But it's never too late to learn something new, especially ones that can take you further long-term. In the words of Martin Luther King Jr. "You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step."
